'She's so quick' - Hamwood Flier becomes latest stakes winner for Kodiac

Hamwood Flier ran out the easy winner of the Swingtime Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

Bred by Frank Dunne, the four-year-old filly continues a fine autumn for Kodiac that also includes stakes wins for Bear Story and Zarinsk and a Grade 1-placed for the Canadian 2yo Appraise.

A winner for Jessie Harrington last summer, Hamwood Flier is now trained in California by Philip d'Amato on behalf of Rockingham Ranch & Talla Racing LLC. She was never headed under Mike Smith on Sunday, making all and kicking clear for a 2 1/4 length success.

“She’s so quick…She just leaves the gate extremely fast and she’s just naturally a quick filly,” said Mike Smith. “You know, Richard Migliore always said, ‘It’s not how fast they go, it’s how they go fast.’ So, that’s kind of the way we played it today…She is just naturally fast and sometimes that’s their asset, that’s their weapon and I just used it to her advantage.”

Hamwood Flier was bred by Frank Dunne out of Fonda, a Quiet American half-sister to Group 3 winner and sire Layman from the family of Shadayid and Diktat.

She becomes the 82nd stakes winner for Kodiac.
