Fresh off a win in the Listed Prix de Montretout at Longchamp, the Tally-Ho bred and sold Seagulls Eleven backed up in fine style at Epsom on Friday, answering all of Oisin Murphy's urgings to deny Persica by a head in the Group 3 Diomed Stakes.
It was the third stakes win for the son of Galileo Gold, whose career highlight had previously come when successful in last year's Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood.
"His last three wins have come on downhill tracks with a bend and a bit of give in the ground so the clues were there," said trainer Hugo Palmer. "We probably overfaced him as a young horse but he was rated 113 as a two-year-old, same as today.
"We had to build him up carefully from the Guineas - he won at Goodwood and then we overfaced him again in Australia [in the Golden Eagle] so we'll try to take slightly smaller steps this time. He's fine over a mile but he could step up to a mile-and-a-quarter at some stage, Christophe Soumillion said as much after he won at Longchamp and Oisin has just said the same thing.
"The Summer Mile at Ascot is often a small field as is the Sussex and then there's the Moulin. Let's try and pick the options that suit him. We can dream."
Seagulls Eleven was bred by us out of the Kodiac mare Thrilled, also dam of the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye winner The Platinum Queen. He was bought by Ed Sackville and Hugo Palmer out of our draft at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Sale.
Many congratulations to owners Two Plus Three Plus Four.
