Tough Mehmas 4yo Redorange gained a deserved stakes breakthrough on Saturday when successful in the Listed John Smith's City Walls Stakes at York.
Trained by Clive Cox on behalf of Al Mohamediya Racing, Redorange came into the race in good form having won his penultimate start at Windsor prior to a fourth in the Listed Achilles Stakes.
On Saturday, he powered through from the back of the field under P J McDonald to come out on top in a tight finish, showing a game attitude in the process.
"It was my first time on Redorange and Rossa Ryan was a massive help to me beforehand, so credit to him as he said the track would suit," said P J McDonald. "I was never really in any doubt the whole way. He got into a lovely rhythm and then I've let him go. He wanted to move to that far rail so I let him join them, and he got competitive with the right horses. On any given the day, the sprinters can rock up. The Nunthorpe would suit him with that fast pace and you can ride him off of that. For a sprinter, he's very relaxed and straightforward, so he should have some more big days in him."
Now the winner of four races and around £125,000 in prize-money, Redorange was bred by Petches Farm Ltd out of the winning Kyllachy mare Ring For Baileys.
